Getting your hair color right isn’t a science. It’s actually quite simple: Stick to colors that compliment your skin tone, figure out if you’re better off with single-process color or highlights, and then decide if you’re going to pay someone else to do it or do it yourself.

Here are 11 hair color tricks from how to avoid the wrong color to how to do it yourself.
Can You Go Blonde?
Some women look good in any color (remember Linda Evangelista?) but most women don’t. If you had blonde hair as a kid, you’ll likely look good with blonde hair as an adult. You’ll also look good blonde if you have pink skin that burns easily, and blue or green eyes.

Remember: if you are going the bottle route, never color your hair more than 2 shades lighter than your natural shade. Learn more about DIY-coloring in How to Color Your Hair at Home.
The Right Way to Go (or Stay) Brown
If you have super pale skin and brown hair, consider going lighter. Super dark shades can wash you out and even make you appear older.

Once you’ve colored your hair, protect your investment with 8 best products for colored hair.

See this photo gallery of famous brunettes and this photo gallery of my favorite dark, short haircuts.
Can I Go Red?
Almost everyone can go red, what’s most important is finding the right shade of red. If you want to go red, I suggest not trying it on your own. Get a professional consultation. You won’t believe the number of emails I get from women writing in unhappy when they tried to go red and their hair turned out orange.

See this famous redheads photo gallery for color inspiration. Also check out these gorgeous red hairstyles and How to Pick the Right Shade of Red.
To Color or to Highlight, That’s the Question
If you have a great base hair tone, you’re better off with highlights. You don’t want to mess with nature; what you want to do is enhance it. If your base color washes out your skin tone or is “blah,” consider single-process color. Single-process color is cheaper than highlights.

Highlights look best when the stylist uses at least two different shades. Ask for more around your face, they can brighten your complexion.

Keep in mind that due to root growth, all-over coloring will need to be touched up every four to eight weeks, while highlights can last up to two or three months, depending on what kind you get. Ask your stylist about a gloss treatment following your color. Gloss boosts color and makes hair shinier.
You’re Going for Highlights, But Which Kind?
There are basically 4 types of highlights: basic foil highlights, baliage or “hair painting,” chunking or “piecing” and lowlighting.

Foil highlights add strands of color to hair. You can get up to 5 different shades in hair to make it look more natural.

Baliage, or “hair painting,” allows the stylist to add natural stripes of color to hair in large or smaller swaths. This is best for women with a great base color who want to go just a couple shades lighter. You won’t need to get roots touched up as much with baliage as you do foils.

Lowlighting allows the stylist to add darker shades to hair. This gives color more contrast.
Should You Do It Yourself?
Home-color kits have come a long way in the past few years. They are perfect for busy people and those who want cut the cost of professional colorings. (We know of a couple top fashion editors who color their hair themselves).

Some great hair coloring kits include:

L’Oreal Natural Match Hair Color Compare Prices

Clairol Nice and Easy Compare Prices

for 12 tips on do-it-yourself coloring, see Should You Color Your Own Hair?
If You’re Going With a Box, Stick With Semipermanent Color
Semipermanent colors wash out after a few washes, whereas permanent colors have to grow out.

Some home hair coloring tips: rub Vaseline around your hairline as a protective measure before applying color. To remove after coloring, rub a small amount of cream cleanser and wipe off with cotton balls. Always wear gloves and wrap an old dark-colored towel around your shoulders. Rinse your eyes with water if you get color in your eyes. If you forgot the Vaseline and stained your skin, rub the area with a cotton ball soaked in alcohol-based toner.
Gray, Gray, Go Away, Don’t Come Again Another Day
Gray hair can be resilient to hair dye because of its coarse texture. If your hair is less than 15 percent gray, opt for a semi-permanent color that’s a shade lighter than your natural color (or matches your color).

Many women who are more than half gray opt to dye their hair blonde. For more information on coloring gray hair, check out this Q&A with stylist Antonio Gonzales of Eva Scrivo in NYC.
So You Hate Your Color? Don’t Strangle the Stylist!
Don’t be afraid to go back to the salon and talk to your stylist if you are not pleased with the results. There are all sorts of ways to fix color that’s just not right. If you did it yourself with a semi-permanent color, look for a shampoo with “ammonium laurel sulfate” to wash away the color faster.

Get more tips on a bad dye job and how to fix it.
Your Color is Gorgeous, Now What?
You invested money for hair color, now protect your investment with color-enhancing shampoo and conditioner once a week. These products deposit miniscule amounts of color into hair. See 8 best hair products for color-treated hair.
Uh-Oh. Your Roots Are Growing In
You can expect your color to last about 6 to 8 weeks before roots begin to show. If your hair is colored, get your roots touched up or do them yourself with a store-bought kit. I like Clairol Nice and Easy Root Touch Ups.

If you have highlights or lowlights, avoid having your whole head colored by asking your stylist to do your hairline, crown and part. A word of warning: Foil highlights require precise application and fixing dark roots is nearly impossible. Consider baliage, which looks more natural.

Or are you one of those few people out there who get stuck with the 80’s look? Then, you need a big help! People who are in the fashion industry are the ones that dictate what’s trendy, what’s not. It also depends on one’s opinion whether such hairstyle is trendy or not.

Trendy hairstyles can be achieved through using different hairystyle products and go mess around with the hair giving it a new look or just plain styling gel to make the hair stand up or something like that. But the truth of the matter is, you uoo can make your very own trendy hairstyle. Just get a hairstyling product and apply it into your hair, creating a hairstyle that suits your personality. Viola! You got a trendy hairstyle.
asian girl trendy hairstyle
For sure you have seen men and women who got stuck with the 70’s look and never changed their hairstyle ever since. It’s quite surprising how those people can keep their hair to look like that after 3 decades. You might think something wrong with them, and need a fashion police to arrest them to change their hairstyles. Start looking at yourself, if you are the same like those people who getstuck. You might not have that 70’s hairdo what you have is a long hair that looks dull and messy.

What keeps you out from getting a new hairstyle, a trendy hairstyle? Trying new things is not bad at all. A trendy hairstyle can make you look fresh, younger and hip! Also it can help you look up-to-date with your look without even going over-the-top.

Now comes the difficult part, choosing a trendy hairstyle for yourself. First, do your own research. Go to Yahoo or Google and key in “trendy hairstyles” and you will see a list of different websites that give out information regarding hairstyles. You can start looking and try to imagine yourself wearing the hairstyles you see on those websites. Second, be sure the hairstyle you are going to choose fits the shape of your face and you look good on it. There are websites that have an animated stuff that can let you choose different hairstyle and let you see how you look like when wearing one. Third, if you are unsure of your chosen trendy hairstyle, ask the help of your hairstylist. Tell your hairstylist what you like and would it make you look good if not ask for recommendations.

Fashion Week put the spotlight on the some great looks for the new season, with super-long lengths and pixie-style bobs leading the runway. Look forward to layers, razor cut bobs, and blunt bangs to freshen up for the season.

The 2010 runway hairstyles looked absolutely amazing, differing from collection to collection. It seems that the hairstyles were either simple or elegant chic with a little bit of vintage allure attached. Short hair is the biggest trend of this new year.

For an edgy-sweet quality, baby-fine hair is snipped into a jaw-length bob that’s blown-dry from a high angled part. A few longer wisps in back add softness and femininity.

With a nod to 60′s hairstyles, this model hit the catwalk in a close-to-the-head snip with chunky at the temples and deep, rounded fringe. The look is perfect for the woman with a lot of confidence and pretty, striking features.

It’s the ideal complement to a 40s-style dress and though it does take a bit of practice to get it perfect, it’s a style that you can quite easily create at home.

Here’s how you do it: Starting with second-day hair (that is, hair you washed yesterday) create a side part, the more dramatic the better. Spritz your hair lightly with hairspray, and using your medium-sized hot rollers, curl 1″ – 2″ sections over and under and pin in place (curling them over will create a flip – not the kind of retro you’re going for!) Continue on both sides of the part until all the hair in front of your crown is in rollers, then use the large rollers to curl the rest of your hair. Leave the rollers to cool; this usually takes around 30 minutes which gives you time to dress and do your makeup.

Once your rollers have cooled, gently unroll them one by one. Using a narrow-toothed comb, slowly and carefully comb out each curled strand; you should only need to do this once or twice as any more will loosen the curl too much. It’s best to enlist the help of a friend to comb out the sections at the back of your head. Spray liberally with hairspray, vow not to touch your hair for several hours, and you’re done!

Depending on the thickness of your hair, this style should last most of the night. Make sure that you’ve attempted old Hollywood hair at least once before you wear it out (that’s what girls’ nights in are for!) and if it’s a really big event that you’re going to, like your school formal, then it’s always best to get it done professionally. Print out the photo of the actress below whose old Hollywood hair most appeals to you, and a good hairstylist will be able to replicate it exactly.

Past hair coloring techniques often made it necessary to camouflage a “dye job” with a perky cut or a wig. Lightening jet-black hair meant hours of bleaching that left hair looking more like yellow straw than platinum blond. Towheads, who wanted a darker shade, were often left with a gothic look before gothic was a trend and those looking for strawberry blond commonly got fire-engine red. Of course, modern hair coloring techniques made fire-engine red a fashion trend instead of a hair coloring catastrophe!

Modern hair coloring techniques add true dimension to style right down to the natural movement of your hair. Highlights, twilights, and lowlights are just a few of the choices that enhance both your face and your hairstyle. In addition, hair coloring techniques include veiling and chunking.

Types of Hair Coloring Techniques
Highlights: Probably one of the first innovations in hair coloring, highlights brighten and add shine. Highlights work best in warm shades of gold, honey, amber, and reds and can be applied with permanent hair color or created with over-the-counter hair mascara, such as Christian Dior’s Mascara Flash Highlights or Revlon Professional Luminates, both of which wash out after one shampoo.

Twilighting: When you want a lighter hair color to show a subtle change, twilighting is the answer. Twilighting tones down too-bright hair colors by adding a few darker tones. Twilights are closely related to lowlights.

Lowlights: A hair coloring technique that adds real depth to hair color. Like twilights, low lights add darker tones and soften the look of over-lightened hair or add dimension to hair color that looks flat. A skilled stylist can weave up to three different colors into your hair by pulling a few strands here and there through a weave cap for a subtle look or foiling chunks of your hair for a dramatic, trendy look.

Veiling: Brightens and enhances old flat hair color by applying a semi-permanent glaze in a richer tone over a permanent shade.

Chunking: Takes large, random sections of hair and infuses them with new color. Chunking is a hair coloring technique that gives dramatic impact to your hairstyle, often by adding bright, trendy colors to natural hair color.

Hair Coloring Technique Processes
Weave caps: Used most often in highlighting, twilighting, and lowlighting, your stylist pulls small strands through holes in the weave cap. The effect is usually a subtle change that enhances your basic hair color. Highlighting with a weave cap also helps to camouflage gray or roots growing back after a permanent hair color application.

Foiling: Your stylist places sections of hair onto rectangular sheets of foil and applies color or lightener, folding the foil to keep the color in place and away from other sections. Of all highlighting techniques, foiling can be applied closest to the root.

Baliage: A great application for textured, natural curls, or wavy hair. Your stylist selects specific areas and hand paints them with color. This dramatic implementation of a hair coloring technique leaves you with a very “personal” appearance!

It’s important to note that although kits are available for most all hair coloring techniques, professional stylists have the skill that comes with experience. Especially for hard to color shades like gray, platinum, and black hair, it’s wisest to consult a professional before you try a new hair color technique at home!

No matter what type of hair nature blessed you with, there are things you can do to keep it healthy, lustrous, looking its best. Here are some tips for a healthy head of hair from the tradition of Ayurveda, the 5,000-year old healing tradition that originated in India:

1. Like everything else about true, lasting beauty, healthy hair begins within your body. Start with your diet. Include lots of green leafy vegetables and sweet juicy fruits. Dairy products such as milk and fresh yogurt will also help. Fresh coconut is also considered excellent “hair food” – sprinkle grated coconut over salads, diced fresh fruit, or rice.

2. Cut down on refined, processed and canned foods. Ayurveda considers foods with artificial preservatives and chemical additives stripped of their inherent “intelligence” and therefore not helpful in supplying nutrition to your body and mind. Ice-cold beverages also hamper the process of digestion and assimilation of nutrients.

3. Cooking with certain spices adds flavor to your food and provides nourishment for your hair. Cumin, turmeric and black pepper are some “hair-friendly” spices. Add a healthy pinch of each to single-portion soups and stews as they are cooking. Saut – 1/8 – 1/4 teaspoon each of the three spices in a teaspoon of ghee (clarified butter) or olive oil and add to cooked veggies. Roasted ground cumin and ground black pepper can be sprinkled over fresh yogurt.

4. Stress can be seriously injurious to long-term health and color of hair. Try and manage your time and tasks to minimize time-related pressures. Practice relaxation techniques such as meditation. Seek out tranquil sights in nature to help restore balance to your mind. Relaxing or uplifting music can be therapeutic. Get adequate, good quality sleep to help the natural process of rejuvenation.

5. Ayurvedic herbs that help hair health include Eclipta alba and Gotu Kola. Eclipta alba is called “Bhringaraj” – literally, king of tresses. It nourishes the hair and helps resistance to stress as well. Brahmi, sometimes called Gotu Kola, also helps balance the mind and nourishes the hair and scalp. Since Ayurveda considers the health, color and luster of hair so dependent on overall mind/body health, synergistic Ayurvedic herbal preparations for hair can also include herbs such as Country Mallow, which is supposed to strengthen the physiology, and Winter Cherry, which aids resistance to stress.

6. Stay away from harsh chemical topical products that can damage hair over time. Look for gentle, natural cleansers and conditioners, especially if you wash your hair more than three times a week. Shampoos and conditioners that contain nourishing botanicals are even better. Read labels carefully – sometimes, products that say “herbal” or “natural” can include no-no chemicals.

7. A warm oil scalp massage two or three times a week will help stimulate and moisturize the scalp. You can use good quality coconut, almond or olive oil Ayurvedic hair oils also contain some of the herbs mentioned earlier. Apply some mildly warmed oil to your hair and gently massage into your scalp evenly with your fingertips. Leave on overnight if you can, if not, leave on for at least an hour or two, then get it out by shampooing your hair. The scalp massage helps you relax and aids sound sleep as well.

8. Never attack wet hair with a brush, no matter how rushed for time you are. Tangles in wet hair are best removed with a wide-toothed comb. Use a wooden comb if you can find one; it won’t generate static electricity. Excessive blow-drying can damage hair in the long-term, making it brittle and causing split ends. If you can, let your hair dry naturally, then brush into place.

9. Last, but not least, brushing your hair regularly to stimulate the scalp will keep it looking healthy and lustrous. Brush each night in all directions in turn – left to right, right to left, front to back and back to front Use smooth long strokes from scalp to hair-tips.

Your hair can indeed be your crowning glory if you treat it right!

It can be so hard to keep your hair strong and healthy with all the chemicals and treatments it goes through on a daily basis. Check out these great daily hair tips below and you will see a big difference in your hair in a week or less!

Try to avoid daily washing if you experience greasy hair. Also, oily and greasy foods can contribute to the condition of your hair, so by watching what you eat you are saving your hair from grease.

For those of you with dry or brittle hair a simple wash out condition will not do the job. You need an intensive conditioning cream that can cleanse your hair without excessive rubbing as well as a hot oil treatment on a regular basis.

If you are prone to frizzy hair than you don’t want to have too many layers in your hair cut as this can increase frizz. As well you want to constantly keep it moisturized and conditioned.

If you have found a little grey in your hair, all it takes is a semi-permanent hair color to cover up those trouble spots. You can also rely on different highlights to add some color and depth to your hair in this case.

Coloring your hair is one of the most common and easiest ways to damage your hair. If you are looking to color, consider highlights as they do not grow out as fast and make your hair look that much more natural.

Blow drying, curling and straightening can all damage your hair and cause split ends. Also use a leave in conditioner and even an intensive hot oil treatment on a weekly basis to keep your hair strong.

Disguising thin hair can be as easy as finding a really good hair cut. Go for the style that naturally matches your face and hair and it will instantly disguise your thinning hair.

Always dry your hair at the roots to ensure that your hairstyle has as much body as possible. By drying the roots first you are creating more volume instantly without products or treatments.

Dandruff is a common problem and all it takes is a switch of shampoos. Use a qualified dandruff shampoo on a regular basis to heal your scalp.

Vitamin A in your diet (Carrots and other vegetables) can create a shinier and healthier head of hair.

Did you know that stress can actually cause dandruff and greasy hair? Minimize the stress in your life if to control the texture of your hair as well as the shine.

When it comes to choosing a new hairstyle, always choose one that blends naturally with your hair thickness and texture as well as the shape of your face. It is not always beneficial to get the trendiest cut if it doesn’t suit your face or your hair.

To add volume to your hair use shampoos that can clean your hair of the products used the day before, as this can really weigh down your hair during the next day.

These are some great every day hair care tips that can help you keep your hair as healthy as possible while you curl it, straighten it, crimp it and even blow dry it. So many things can affect your hair’s health that you may have not even realized it before now. To some, scene hair may resemble emo hair, goth, or old punk hair but the hairstyles in this trend use lots of varying techniques in hair coloring, cutting, and styling to combine and create trendier, upbeat pieces. There is no real words to define what scene hair is because of the assorted ways of styling hairstyles for both girls and guys but the following tips are ideal for anyone looking to move in the scene trend.

Scene Hairstyles Not Emo Not Goth

For anyone interested in a scene hairstyle, there are certain aspects that really stick out but may overlap other trends. For scene guys, scene hair with choppy, jagged layers works strikingly as well as combinations of colors with several hues. The side burns can be left long and pointed forward and front bangs can be swept or waxed forward. For scene girls, there are numerous hairstyles using choppy, blunt cut layers, eye skimming bangs, poufy volume crown, and coon extensions just to name a few. What makes scene hair versatile are the various styling methods that can be done to switch the look of the hair from day to day or the colors that can be added to make the hairstyles very stylish including advanced coloring techniques like paneling or tone on tone.

But with 1980s styles making a comeback, 1980s styles can be created with the use of hair spray. A big ponytail crinkles crimp and of course tight curls no matter what 2010 hairstyle video says everything.

Hair Tips and Ideas.

There are many factors to consider when choosing a short hair style if you think you would like short hairstyles you should bracket and also look at all of the very short hairstyles and medium hairstyles. I have always believed that the perfect style can only be achieved when you considered all the variables for instance your new short hair cut should match your personality lifestyle time constraints body shape face shape hair texture hair density eye color and skin tone.

It should create a sense of balance between your head face and body for those interested in getting a shorter haircut and being free of taking care of all that long hair these hairstyles might be exactly what you need most hairstyles will fit any age group and hair color is an easy adjustment do not let these be a tool to narrow your list of potential hairstyles or haircuts.

When I see articles on the Web that advertise that they can help you grow long hair fast I totally cringe. The real truth is that there are absolutely no short cuts (no pun intended) to growing long hair fast.

If I had a dollar for the hundreds of thousands of emails I have received over the past ten years asking me how to achieve “fast long hair” I would not be sitting here writing this “truth in advertising” article.

Yes, there are many things you can do to maximize your God-given genetic hair growth cycle but if someone promises that you can go from a chin length bob to bra-strap length hair “fast” there is something missing.

So really, what is fast anyway? Is fast overnight, within a month or just a bit quicker than your genetic programming allows?

There are many things that can stall natural hair growth. The hair growth stallers can include poor diet, too much caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, recreational drugs or other natural vitamin robbers.

Stress, age, health problems and prescription drugs can also slow or stall hair growth. Climate has a hand in growth rates along with lifestyle issues. Not enough sleep, daily water or maintenance nutrients can cause hair to hit a dead stop in its growth cycle.

To simplify the hair growth process and promise fast long hair is just not a reality. At least in this current Universe.
